Josiah Wheat, Jr. (Joe) is Senior Counsel in the firm’s Texas Office. His practice focuses on oil, gas and mineral law, including the preparation of drilling and division order title opinions. He also has experience in due diligence projects and preparation of acquisition and mortgage title opinions, negotiating and drafting mineral conveyances, oil and gas leases, assignments and right-of-way agreements, and representing working interest owners in receivership proceedings.
Prior to joining Dupuis & Polozola, Joe was a sole practitioner, concentrating in the areas of oil and gas, real estate and business law, and for several years was of counsel to Wilson & Johnson, LLP. He is also a former petroleum landman. Joe received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance in 1979 from Sam Houston State University, a Bachelor of Business Administration in Petroleum Land Management in 1983 from The University of Texas at Austin, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1991 from St. Mary’s University. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable Joe J. Fisher, United States District Judge, Eastern District of Texas.
Joe is a member of the Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and is certified in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. An Eagle Scout, Joe currently serves as Eagle Scout Advisor for Boy Scout Troop 8 in Kingwood, Texas.
